It has been a couple of weeks ago now that we did our fun Farm unit...man, where does the time go?!? We did so many fun activities....but here are the things that I managed to snap some pictures of! With a large Kinder class-it's definitely more difficult to get a chance to/remember to grab the camera and snap some pics :)
Here's the poem that we started each day with. The kids LOVED trying to figure out the clue to see which farm animal we'd be learning about that day :) I got the idea for this poem from Michelle at Fabulous in First!
I remembered to snap a couple of pics on pig day!!! ;)
First we read this super cute, super easy book about Mud! It's a very simple book, but really gets them thinking about some good adjectives for mud :)
Then, we did this piggie bubble map ;) I got this idea from Deanna Jump's blog ;)
The idea is to take the adjectives that the kids came up with to create a poem. So, it goes...
Mud, mud-I like mud!
_______ mud, ________ mud.
__________, ___________, ___________ mud.
I like mud!
But, I cheated just a LITTLE bit ;) We came up with different adjectives-but, "decided" on this one ;) I secretly had it typed up ahead of time because I wanted them to add it to their poetry journals ;) Shhhhh!
So, we read it several times, added it to our poetry journals, found and highlighted our sight words and saw how many "M"s we could find.
Then, we made some mud!! Super simple instant chocolate pudding. (Only takes a few minutes)
We used little pink marshmallows for our "piggies". I made up this little response sheet to throw some Math in ;)
I also took some pics of our Cow day :) This is a great book by Gail Gibbons to start out the day ;)
Then, we watch this video about how to milk a cow by hand...
Do you know how to milk a cow??? I never did before this little experiment!!! ;) It works just like a real cow!!!! All I did was fill a rubber glove with water and a bit of tempra paint to make it white and a tiny bit thicker than water. I tied the glove to a chair with yarn and poked a hole in one of the fingers. Then, I hung my little "Milk the Cow" poster up ;) You have to pinch off one of the utters with your thumb and pointer finger to trap the milk in the utter-so that it doesn't go back up. THEN, you squeeze!! The kids think this is the coolest thing ever! ;)
The only other thing that I managed to snap a picture of were a couple of my centers ;)
Here is the farm animal race to the top. Great for beginning practice wit graphing and for one to one.
Here we counted the corn ;) Notice the color coded number line to help my approaching level kiddos write their numbers ;)
Ways to make 5....
Spin a shape...
In this center they match capital to lowercase letters. Here are two expamples of response sheets. I use different versions for my different leveled kids.
You can check these centers by clicking on the picture below:
OH my goodness Katie, I love it all!!! But I think the milking cow is my favorite!!!! How stinkin' cute!!!
ReplyDeleteWe are just starting our farm unit and I am excited to incorporte some of your ideas! I already do the cow milking and every year the kids LOVE it! The Piggy snack is such fun too! :o)
