I LOVE making my Christmas cards every year and deciding what photos to use....but they are just so darn pricey.
I LOVE Shutterfly! I've always used them for cards, photo books, prints, etc. But, the average cute little photo card costs you about 40-50 cents each!!!! I LOVE passing out X-Mas cards and I like to give one to each of my students and everyone that I work with as well:) But, this can be pretty pricey when you add all of those up along with all of your friends and family!!!
Well, a couple of years ago-I had this idea and it has worked fabulously!!!
Instead of using their drag and drop template cards that cost 50 cents each-I decided to design my own card in powerpoint!!! Then, I saved it as a JPEG and ordered them as PRINTS!!!!! Well, when you order them as prints they don't cost nearly as much....plus, there's so many ways to get them for FREE!!!!
If you're a member at Shutterfly (which is free) they often send out coupons for free prints. If you refer friends, guess what?? Free Prints!!! AND-if you create a new account-Free Prints!!!
Shutterfly also has Prepaid Print packages which is a great way to get your prints super cheap! Right now-they have a deal going on where you can get 200 prints for $20. Then, you order the amount of prints that you want and it automatically deducts that amount from your plan at check out.
Here's the card that I just made:
To start, just draw a 4x6 sized square. (Use the rulers along the top and sides of powerpoint as a guide-see arrow.)
Here's the one I made for Finny's announcement:
You can look on Shutterfly, Pinterest, etc. to get inspiration for your design.
When you're finished with your design, save it as a JPEG. You will need to open it up in a program like paint shop or photo shop to crop your new JPEG to get your 4x6 image-just crop it and get rid of all of that white background.
Then, just upload it to Shutterfly and order as PRINTS.
This time, I got the prepaid deal and got 200 cards for 20 bucks!!!! Bargain! Now, if I could only figure out a way to save money on the postage:) LOL!
This is such a great idea... I love it. I am going to be dud and send out store bought Christmas cards this year, because well I am just to plain sick to do anything right now. BUT once Baby Keller is born I will be making my own announcements and cards from here on out. Thanks for the idea Kate.

ReplyDeleteI've been making collages of 4 to 5 pics on Photogrid and then uploading them to my class blog and to ReadWriteSing. I was just thinking that it's going to be a breeze to make my class yearbook on Shutterfly, because I've basically made each page on Photogrid. Each pic becomes a jpeg when uploaded from my phone!

Love it! My photo cards are already done for this year, but that is absolutely what I'm going to do next year! I love Shutterfly too and even order my calendars from them. Since I'm in Canada it's the shipping that costs so much! Any ideas how to make a photo calendar? LOL. I'm your newest follower.
